Elective Program
One of the special differences in our Lyman School programs is our Elective Day. Every Friday, students step away from their core academic schedule to immerse themselves in a rich selection of special elective classes they choose themselves. This dedicated day of exploration is more than just enrichment — it is a core part of how we honor each child’s individuality.

Elective Day
Because Elective Day is built into the rhythm of every week, students learn to advocate for their own interests, manage their time, and take ownership of their learning. These classes can include:
A beneficial life skill that teaches nutrition and kitchen safety while building literacy, math, science, and fine motor skills. Many ingredients come from our school garden.
Cooking
Helps children relax and self-regulate while teaching patience and delayed gratification as they plant from seeds. Going from garden to table helps develop a connection to where food comes from.
Gardening
Teaches sportsmanship, eye-hand coordination, upper body strength, and balance.
Archery
Teaches self-discipline, coordination, speed, self-defense, patience, and proper fitness.
Boxing
Jiu Jitsu
Develops mental discipline, problem-solving abilities, and physical fitness through the practice of ground-based grappling techniques. Students learn respect, perseverance, and self-confidence while building strength, flexibility, and strategic thinking skills.
Teaches focus, precision, and patience while developing hand-eye coordination and balance. Students learn sportsmanship, scoring skills, and social interaction in a fun, low-pressure environment that builds confidence and provides lifelong recreational enjoyment.
Bowling
Enhances social skills, boosts self-esteem, and develops fine motor skills while teaching new concepts.
Board Games
Makes learning about a variety of subjects fun. Students learn study skills and create their own trivia questions.
Quiz Bowl
Teaches creative thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills while enhancing spatial reasoning.
Creative Lego
Combines engineering, programming, and problem-solving as students design, build, and program robots to complete challenges. This hands-on STEM experience develops logical thinking, teamwork, and introduces basic coding concepts in an engaging, accessible way.
Lego Robotics
Teaches students practical skills to help around the house, including basic carpentry, plumbing,
and electrical work.
Home Improvement
Encourages imaginative thinking and creativity while giving students another way to express themselves. Students learn art techniques and fundamentals.
Studio Art
Develops fine motor skills and creativity while building confidence and communication abilities.
Arts and Crafts

Please plan on spending about an hour on your tour.
If possible, have your child with you so that the director can spend some time getting to know them. If your child can not attend, another appointment will be required.
Please bring any relevant information regarding your child, i.e.,
school records, IEP's and evaluations.
